LAHORE
GENERAL HOSPITAL
Lahore General Hospital,
Lahore over an area of (256 Kanals) situated on Ferozepur
Road, Lahore about 17 Kilometers which was initially
proposed for beggar house and its foundation stone was
laid down by her excellency BEGUM
NAHEED SIKANDAR MIRZA W/o Governor General of
Pakistan on 27-02-58. The first phase of the building was
completed in late 1958. An opening ceremony was held on
30-09-58 by her excellency BEGUM
NAHEED SIKANDAR MIRZA.
Due to some reasons the proposed beggar house
plan was converted and it was decided by the then Government to provide
Health facilities to the General public. Hence the birth of Lahore
General Hospital took place in the early 1959.
The Lahore General Hospital was inaugurated
by his excellency MR.
AKHTAR HUSSAIN, the Governor West Pakistan on 29-01-1959.
Lahore General Hospital started functioning
in the old blocks of proposed Beggar House. At that time, Hospital was
used as convalescent home for the super flex patients of Mayo Hospital,
Lahore and there were no proper treatment / diagnostic facilities
available at that time.
The department of Neurosurgery of King Edward
Medical College, Lahore was established at Lahore General Hospital in
1966. This department remained housed in old building till 1981.
Then after the birth of Postgraduate Medical
Institute Lahore (PGMI) in 1974; the Hospital was affiliated with PGMI in
July, 1975.
The bed strength at that time was 390 i.e. :-
In April 1984, the
Neurosurgery / Physiotherapy department was completed at a cost of Rs.
85.85 lacs. This department shifted to new building, with most modern and
sophisticated facilities including CT Scan which was first CT Scan in
public health sector & it remained the only one for about ten years.
The out patient
department was housed in a SARAI in 1984 which was built-up for the
relatives of patients who come to Lahore General Hospital, Lahore from
far flung areas of Pakistan.
