Postgraduate Medical College (PGMI) was established in 1973 to provide post
graduate education in basic and clinical sciences. Lahore
General Hospital (LGH) has
been its affiliated hospital for a long time. For the PGMI
to advance further it needed to develop into a vertically
integrated medical institution with its own nursery of under
graduate students, post graduate and diploma students and
eventually a PhD programme taking it to a degree awarding
status.
This dream of having its own undergraduate
college came close to fruition many times but has remained
un-realized until now. Under the instruction of our
honourable chief minister we are now on the verge of
admitting students.
Through this effort the people of Punjab will
get a new high quality medical college at minimal cost. We
will be admitting 100 students of high merit every year.
They will receive education from perhaps the ablest faculty
in the country. These students will be rubbing shoulders
with post graduate students from day one and those who are
so inclined will have the opportunity of taking part in
research projects being conducted at the PGMI.
The real beneficiary will be the patient’s of
LGH. LGH has suffered as it has to receive all its from
other institutions. While there is no doubt that they are
dedicated workers, you naturally have a greater sense of
ownership in your parent institution. LGH will soon have
students doing evening duties and in not too distant a
future residents from its own medical college (Ameer-ud-Din
Medical College).
All in all it will be a great asset for
medical education, the PGMI and people of the Punjab. |
